12/9 - Things are Dying in the North Atlantic

Rather than rework what Jason Lefkowitz presents really nicely on the Oceana blog, just take a look at what he reports under, "Britain Sounds the Alarm on Oceans." And the commentary from the Prince of Wales is really sad. Some days you wonder whether things really are that bad in the oceans and if we're just a bunch of alarmists, but then you read something like that and realize ocean decline is for real.

There is a similar article which says ""Around the world there's evidence that creating marine reserves -- areas where fishing is not allowed -- leads to a several fold increase in the size and number of fish, shellfish and other animals," commission chairman Tom Blundell said." Hmm lets think about this, where we actually try to conserve fish and ecosystems that fish live in, species flourish. WOW it must have taken him at leats 30 years to figure that out.

As a friend of mine at National Marine Fisheries Service said to me last spring, "The public might as well start getting to know the term MPA, because like 'em or not, they're headed their way."

It's only a matter of sooner (when there's still something left to preserve) or later.
